Asbestos waste illegally dumped in Great Yarmouth field

Rubbish, including asbestos, has been illegally dumped in a farmer’s field.

Great Yarmouth Borough Council is now appealing for information to help catch those responsible.

A spokesman for the borough council said:

“Great Yarmouth has one of Norfolk’s best records for enforcement on environmental crimes, and always prosecutes for fly-tipping, where there is adequate evidence and where appropriate.

“This waste, reported to the borough council’s environmental rangers by Norfolk Constabulary on October 29, was fly-tipped on the A149 at the turn off towards Martham.

To help with their investigation, the rangers are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen what must have been a low loader-type vehicle, entering the farm fields via Repps Road, and driving down to the corner of the field.

Alternatively, someone may recognise the waste, which appears to be the roof and contents from an old shed, garage or outbuilding.

Householders are reminded of their legal duty to ensure that any waste collectors they use have a waste carrier licence from the Environment Agency.

Any contractor who collects asbestos must also have the correct approvals and authorisations.”

Anyone who witnesses an environmental crime in the borough or has information that may help to identify an offender can contact the rangers on 01493 846478 and provide as much information as possible, such as the location and time of offence, what occurred, the description or address of the offender(s), and the registration number of any vehicle involved.
