Alan Jolliffe, from Stanford-le-Hope was suspected to be suffering from the asbestos-related cancer in 2013. His family believes he came into regular contact with asbestos during his employment. His widow, Patricia, said:
“My husband used to talk about how asbestos was in lots of the council properties he worked in. We also knew builders, carpenters and electricians who worked for the council and believe they were exposed to asbestos during their careers.
I remember Alan telling me he used to go into council properties where asbestos was being used or disturbed.”
Mr Jolliffe was first employed as an apprentice carpenter, then as a general foreman and then building surveyor from 1972 until 1991. As a general foreman, he was responsible for checking council properties, such as schools, offices and homes, which needed building work.
He would survey properties and assess the cost of repair and maintenance required before work began. A council spokeswoman confirmed the family’s claim, but was unable to comment further while the investigation takes place.
